Dry building board: features of use and scope
High-quality modern lumber is the most popular and widespread type of construction products today. Their popularity is due to a wide range, versatility of use and high performance properties. Properly treated raw materials can last a long time without the need for replacement or repair.
One of the leaders in sales in the building materials market is dry building board. Its service life depends on the thickness, but in general it is calculated in tens of years. In addition, proper technological processing endows this type of lumber with such a useful property as resistance to the natural shrinkage process. That is, products from a dry board are not deformed under the influence of environmental factors.
Production features
For dry building boards, pine wood is most often used as a raw material. This breed has good consumer properties, it is available to a wide range of consumers. The production process of dry building board is quite long. It consists of several stages, performed sequentially:
- removing the bark from a pine tree. Special equipment is used. The logs are fed through a conveyor system to the disc-type saws, where they are spread along one of two possible ways – tangentially or radially;
- cleaning the ends of products and sidewalls;
- supply of finished boards to drying chambers. There they are aged until the moisture content of the wood reaches 8-10%.
After passing through all stages of processing, smooth dry edged boards of the correct geometric shape are obtained. They comply with the established standards.
Types of building board
A board as lumber can be of different types, not only in terms of the degree of drying, but also in other characteristics. Of course, boards of the best condition, including for export, have a number of features. Drying of such material should be of the highest quality, but, in addition, the appearance of lumber is also important.
The combination of qualities gives the right to assign the highest grade – "Extra" to such material. This is a knotless, planed, edged board that does not have visible defects. Small non-penetrating cracks are acceptable.
Grade "A" is also distinguished by high quality processing, but light knots and resin pockets are acceptable in it. It can be applied to any types of construction works.
Materials of grades "Extra" and "A" of disk cut are used for the manufacture of profile boards used in finishing work.
Grade "B" is suitable for many types of carpentry and construction work. Its cost is somewhat lower, since there are not only knots or cracks here, but also traces of the vital activity of insects.
Grade "C" is used for the manufacture of containers, temporary building fences, some hidden structures, for example, roof lathing. In this case, the presence of cracks and knots is considered the norm.
Advantages of using a dry board in construction
- The material has a minimum level of natural moisture. So, before the drying process, lumber has a moisture content of over 70%. Therefore, they are not used in construction or decoration, since such a board will deform during the natural loss of moisture. This type of product must be dried. In this case, chamber drying is used. It is this method that allows you to carefully remove moisture to a level of 8 – 10%. As a result, the board perfectly withstands interaction with the environment, gains strength and is well subjected to further processing;
- The products are characterized by a long service life. A dry building board can be treated with fire retardants to make it non-combustible, insect and rot resistant agents. As a result of proper and high-quality processing, products can last more than 30 years. At the same time, they can be re-painted, applied varnishes and protective substances;
- Products are not treated with potentially hazardous chemicals. Therefore, these lumber are environmentally friendly. Moreover, they create a favorable microclimate for humans. In this sense, a board made of pine and other coniferous trees is the best;
- An important feature and advantage is the thermal insulation qualities of a dry board. It perfectly protects against the penetration of drafts, temperature changes. At the same time, in the summer, wood keeps the room cool;
- Ease of installation. It is performed mechanically using special carpentry fasteners – nails, self-tapping screws. No special tools are required for work, you can get by with a hammer and a screwdriver or a screwdriver – tools that can be found in almost any home;
- Ease of storage and transportation. Due to the correct geometric shape, a dry building board can be compactly laid and loaded onto transport. There are no special requirements for content and storage. Optimal storage conditions are quite simple to create – you need to find a dry room and shift the products with slats to ensure natural ventilation;
- Availability. The price of a dry construction board is relatively low, given the versatility, ease of use and durability. In principle, there is no more affordable and practical alternative.
Fields of application
Like all lumber, dry edged boards are most in demand in construction. At the same time, due to their practicality and ease of use, the scope of their application is extensive. They are used in the arrangement of roofs, filing ceilings, as flooring. Durable and aesthetic material is best suited for organizing partitions, frames, in particular, it is used in the construction of low-rise buildings.
For example, a dry building board 100x100 mm. The main purpose of this lumber is to use it in the construction of rafters and create floors between floors. In addition, it is indispensable in the construction of stairs, props. However, its scope is not limited to this at all. A planed board has many advantages, one of which is the minimum percentage of shrinkage in suburban construction.
Dry board is especially highly valued in the construction of houses and baths. Finished buildings have an attractive appearance, the house is very warm and has a natural aroma of wood. The building maintains a special microclimate, it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Affordable cost allows you to build a home at minimal cost.
Board 150x150 mm is also actively used for the construction of wooden log houses – this is the section that is now the most popular among buyers. Due to the low price and quality characteristics, this product is constantly in demand. It has excellent sound insulation, heat resistance, good bearing function. A convenient square section makes it easy to build cottages and baths.
The main use of 150x150mm construction board:
- formation of lower, support beams;
- formation of walls and truss system;
- formation of floor and ceiling beams.
When laying the main wall from a section of 150x150 between each bar, it is obligatory to lay a heat-insulating material, such as jute, tow, linen.
Buildings from this section are suitable for permanent residence in climates down to -30C.
